HISTORY / BACKGROUND:
Founded in 2017, the Pocket Change Project is a volunteer-run committee of the Pocket Community Association in The Pocket, a neighbourhood in the east Danforth area of Toronto. We are a community group of neighbours helping neighbours, working together to reduce our individual and collective carbon footprints. We aim to live sustainably, without reliance on fossil fuels, so The Pocket can become a net-zero community as soon as possible, and help contribute towards achieving Toronto's net-zero climate goals.
We work actively to make it easier for all of us to retrofit our houses, make the switch to more sustainable transportation options, green our yards and public spaces, and engage in other sustainable living practices. We also hold regular public events, such as educational webinars and in-person meetings, our popular Eco Fun Fair, and climate kitchen parties, to bring people together, learn together, and keep having important conversations about how we can best advance climate action now in our neighbourhood.
Our retrofit coordination service is our largest initiative to date and has been attracting some attention. To date, we have about 30 homeowners all at various stages of retrofits – or green home improvements – using this service.
The Pocket Change Project is collaborative, positive, and solutions-focused. Our work happens through an elected executive committee, and several dedicated working groups.
We believe in people power and the power of community. We know that by working together, we can have a significant impact, and play a role in creating a healthier, more enjoyable, more equitable, and greener community and world for all. There’s never been a better time to take real climate action locally. Let’s do this!
